Activity Ideas That Work

LUAU ACTIVITIES
Hawaiian Huli-Huli
Chicken:

Hawaii's own version of
barbecued chicken is cooked with
Huli-Huli Sauce (made with pure
Hawaiian brown sugar cane along
more).
Variation 1

Ingredients:
5 lbs chicken pieces
1/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons sherry
1 piece ginger root, crushed
1 clove garlic, crushed

Directions:
Arrange chicken, skin side up, on
rack of broiler pan. Broil 6 to 8
inches from unit in electric oven for
10 minutes on each side or cook
on an outdoor grill. Combine the
remaining ingredients. Baste the
chicken and continue broiling or
grilling for 10 more minutes on
each side, basting frequently with
sauce.  

Variation 2

Ingredients:
3 broken fryers, split or quartered
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup shoyu (Japanese soy
sauce)
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/3 cup white wine
1/4 cup frozen pineapple juice
concentrate.
pinch of fresh or dried ginger.
drop or two of Worcestershire
sauce.

Directions:
Mix ingredients in bowl, brush over
chicken pieces. Grill over
barbecue, turning and basting with
sauce until it is done (about 40
minutes).  

Variation 3

Ingredients:
4-6 chicken halves
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1/2 cup chicken broth or white wine
1/4 cup pineapple juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire
sauce
1 tablespoon fresh ginger or garlic

Directions:
Combine all ingredients.  Marinate
for 2hrs at room temperature or 24
hours in the refrigerator.  Place the
chicken skin side down on a grill.  
Cook for 30 minutes. Turn the
chickens and cook for another
25-30 minutes
or until done.

Note: Huli-Huli sauce can also be
purchased pre-made in bottled
form and many supermarkets.
Hawaiian Luau Party Ideas

Collect flowers and greenery and use them to decorate entryways, restrooms,
and gathering areas.
Light tiki torches to add a hawaiian glow to your luau and keep the bugs away.
Serve your food buffet style.
Buy hawaiian tableware to serve with the food.
Greet your guests with hawaiian leis or send them with your invitation.
Hang fish nets from ceilings or doorways.
Place inflatable palm trees around your party.
Have your guests dress in grass skirts or hawaiian shirts.
String hawaiian lights around buffet table or doorways.
Buy a luau centerpiece to compliment your buffet table.
Pour Kahlua in hawaiian glasses.
Buy umbrella straws to go with the glasses.
Purchase a hula video along with a luau party music CD. You and your guests
will be able to learn how to hula and have fun dancing to hawaiian music.
Get hawaiian candy to hand out to your guests.
Be the life of the luau with coconut bras!

Coconut Tree Paper Craft
A simple cut and paste craft.

Materials required:  printer, paper, scissors, glue,
something to color with (optional)

Print out the template of choice.

Colour (where appropriate) and cut out the template
pieces.

Glue the trunk onto a background piece of paper
(blue or white construction paper work well).  

Glue the leaves onto the trunk.

Glue the coconuts onto the leaves.

Close the template window after printing to return to this screen.  

Set page margins to zero if you have trouble fitting the template on one page
(FILE, PAGE SETUP or FILE, PRINTER SETUP in most browsers).

Luau Games:

Beach Ball Volleyball:

Tape a badminton net or a sheet up across a room or area. Have the residents
on teams and let them hit a beach ball over the net. We didn't keep score and
those that couldn't hit it over, threw it.

Pin a coconut on a palm tree

Items needed: blind fold green and brown construction paper glue make
pattern of leaves for palm tree and coconut and bottom (base of tree) Be sure to
make your tree large enough. Have Fun!!!

Try a pineapple bowl-off.

Using construction paper, draw a picture of a pineapple and tape/glue it to an
empty pop bottle. (we did 5 bottles/pins) Use a coconut as your bowling ball
and have fun! Later the coconut can be incorporated into the snack of the day.
